What We Believe
How Scripture is Interpreted in Our Community of Faith
We believe that the Holy Scriptures contain the Word of God. We study scripture in an effort to better understand the time and culture in which it was written. We then strive to apply the basic truth of scripture in a loving and inclusive way to a radically changing cultural situation. When in doubt, we remember God’s loving desire in Christ to love and value all people.
We stand against and reject Biblical literalism and fundamentalism. We do NOT believe in the inerrancy of scripture. While all of Scripture is normative for faith and life, we hold that many of the laws outlined in the Old Testament have been declared null and void in Christ. In other words, they no longer have the power to mandate behavior and action. In matters of faith and life, we focus on Christ and on Christ’s love for ALL people.
Worship Styles
God speaks to us through Scripture, the sermon, hymns and anthems, as well as through our interactions and relationships with others in worship.
Worshiping God is both an honor and a privilege! Trinity’s worship service is typically held at 10:00 am each Sunday morning and provides an opportunity for the Trinity family as well as many neighbors and guests to praise God and celebrate the joy found in our common identity as God’s beloved, precious children.
Within the context of traditional worship, the gathered congregation is fed and forgiven through the Sacrament of Holy Communion, nourished and encouraged through the Scripture readings and sermon, and inspired and blessed through hymns and anthems. The Sunday morning worship experience centers our life together in the faith and gives us strength, sustenance, and courage to meet the challenges and demands of the coming week with the knowledge that we are loved and supported by an entire community of believers.
Worship is supported and enhanced by music.
The Adult Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:15 pm in the Choir Room on the second floor of the Pence Building. Each Sunday, the choir gathers at 9:30 am in the Choir Room for a brief rehearsal and warm-up. For 10:00 am worship, the choir assembles in the Sanctuary balcony or around the piano in the Gym to support and strengthen congregational singing and to offer special choral music in a wide variety of styles.
The Handbell Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings in the Handbell Rehearsal Room on the second floor of the Pence Building from 6:00 to 6:55 pm. Ringing handbells is a unique and especially satisfying kind of precisely coordinated human community. The group is in effect a single percussion instrument with many hands, hearts, and minds.
